3 Simple Rules for a More Organized Home

August, 2023:  Author: Michael Molinaro / Publisher: Kenneth Godby

If you’re reading this article, there is a good chance you are ready to do something about the clutter that has taken over your home and your life. Here are three (3) simple rules to help in your journey to a more organized and disciplined life.

Remember, a great place to start with any decluttering project is to call your local Bin There Dump That for a residential friendly dumpster. Whether you are looking for a dumpster rental in Cleveland, a dumpster rental in Canton, a dumpster rental in Akron, or a dumpster rental in Northeast Ohio in general, Bin There Dump That is here to help.

Rule One: After a Year It’s Time to Let Go

If you and your family are planning on relocating, that is the perfect time to declutter your home. More often than not, however, we find ourselves packing up entire drawers full of items that could be discarded instead. If this sounds like you, do not fret. It’s simply human nature to try to hold onto things like this.

I used to keep a collection of movie ticket stubs. Each one had the film title and date on it, I could look at them and fill my head with memories of great times with the people I love. Letting those go felt like a betrayal of some sort, but that feeling is just ourselves falling victim to our pack rat nature. At the end of the day, they were just ticket stubs.

How do you accept and begin the great task of decluttering your home? One step at a time. A mass exodus of everything at once may be too traumatic for some. It’s good to take things slowly. Maybe you will start with one room a week, even one drawer at a time if that’s what feels more manageable to you. Go at your own pace.

Having trouble deciding what goes and what stays? This is where our first rule is applied. If the item has not been used in more than a year, let it go. If you don’t want to throw all these items away, you could have a yard sale or donate them to a charitable organization. Whatever you decide to do with it, just make sure it is out of the house!

Rule Two: Everything in Its Place

Whether you’ve been in your home for a short time or for many years, the clutter accumulates quickly. Some items are useful and should always be accessible in your home. Many times, however, we find ourselves tearing the house apart looking for a specific item. Why is that? Most likely, it has to do with your organizational skills.

Recently I spent far too much time searching for my tape measure. Finally, it dawned on me that I had placed it in a kitchen drawer with the pens and pencils, scissors, and tape. At the time, it seemed convenient. I also told myself I would remember I had placed it there. If I had simply put the tape measure back in the toolbox in the garage, I would have found it right away.

This brings us to our second rule: There’s a place for everything. Believe it or not, living in an unorganized space takes a stressful mental toll on everyone living in that space. It can cause anxiety and depression in some individuals. Establish where things are meant to be kept and do not allow anyone to stray from that. There should be a place for everything and everything in its place.

Rule Three: Do We Really Need a Junk Drawer?

Have you ever found something on your table or counter and shoved it into a drawer, thinking it may be useful sometime in the future? It’s easy for us to assign purpose to the things in our homes, even when these items should just be thrown away. Where do these things end up, you ask? The junk drawer!

Remember the measuring tape for which I searched my whole home? It was in the junk drawer. This brings us to our final rule: Get rid of that junk drawer!

It may sound extreme to some. Everything useful has a place better suited for it than in that drawer. All else can be discarded. Give it a try. Clean out the junk drawer, assign a new home to everything you’re keeping, and see how it goes. It may take some getting used to, but in the long run you will be glad to have it out of your life.
