Household Hazardous Waste: Dumpster Rental FAQ

May 2023 Author: Michael Molinaro /  Publisher: Kenneth Godby

Whether you’ve got a dumpster rental in Cleveland, a dumpster rental in Akron, or a dumpster rental in Elyria, you’re bound to come up with some questions during your rental term. Here at Bin There Dump That, two of the most popular questions asked to us are: “What materials CANNOT go in the bin?”, and “What items fall under the category of ‘household hazardous waste’?”

Every project comes with its own various kinds of debris and waste. Whether you’re cleaning out the basement, renovating the kitchen, or replacing the deck, the question “Can I put this in the bin?” always comes to mind. While scrap wood, drywall and stacks of old magazines are more than welcome to go in the bin, it’s important to keep in mind that household hazardous waste cannot.

Let’s take some time to go over what is considered hazardous, and what your options are if you do stumble upon any of that material during your project.

Gasoline Tanks

Examples of Household Hazardous Waste

When talking about dimensions of the bin, sure, you can find a way to fit just about anything in there. That doesn’t, however, mean that you should. From hazardous to corrosive, flammable to explosive, here is a list of products that cannot go into your residential roll off dumpster rental:

• Propane tanks

• Ammunition

• Leftover paint, paint thinner, stains and varnish

• Household cleaning products

• Car Batteries

• Fluorescent light bulbs

• Motor oil, gasoline, and antifreeze

• Aerosol cans

• Pesticides and fertilizers

• Pharmaceuticals and bio-medical waste

* TVs, computer monitors and tires CAN go in the bin, but an extra fee will be applied. This is because we are charged extra fees to dispose & recycle those materials.

** Dirt and masonry products are allowed, but only with approval by Bin There Dump That upon placing your order.

Hazardous Chemicals

Safe and Legal Options for Disposing of Hazardous Materials

Once your bin has arrived, it may be tempting to throw everything you have in there. We understand there may be some disappointment to learn about the limitations of your residential roll off dumpster rental. This does not mean for you to dump anything down the drain, hide it in your weekly trash pickup, or make a bonfire in the backyard.

There are much safer ways to go about removing and disposing of the items listed above. Here are a few solutions and services that are available in most municipalities.

Permanent Waste Collection Facility – Some communities have designated facilities that allow residents to dispose of unopened or partially used household chemicals. These facilities may even offer an exchange program, which will allow residents to reuse items that others have dropped off.

Community Collection Days – If your area does not have a waste collection facility, they probably schedule community collection days. Different items may be accepted on different days, so be sure that you’re aware of what is being collected on which days.

Curbside Waste Pick-up – Check with city hall for transporting waste in your community. Some companies may allow you to schedule a curbside pick-up, as well as other local environmental agencies may provide similar services.

Local Business Collection Days – A few of your local businesses may occasionally turn their spaces into a waste collection site. For example, your local hardware store may take old propane tanks, or local auto mechanic garages may collect motor oil.
